Introduction and Background

There may be instances where you wish to monitor the status of a VIP via a ping/ICMP monitor. An example of this would be the desire to monitor an APIPA VIP (169.254.x.x) on your Citrix ADC used for StoreFront, LDAP, or RADIUS load balancing to influence the health state of a GSLB service for Citrix Gateway, which we’ve covered previously here (as short of a cert being unbound or a network outage on the ADC, nothing will take a Citrix Gateway vServer down even though it depends on other services to function).

Conventional monitors such as TCP may not function against the local APIPA VIP, but ICMP will. However, the VIP will still respond to pings by default even if down or out of service which renders ping relatively useless in this scenario.

Process

Very easy. To get the APIPA VIP to stop responding to ping, navigate to System > Network > IPs and edit the APIPA VIP. By default the ICMP Response setting will be NONE, meaning the VIP will respond to ping no matter the state of the VIP. Set it to ONE_VSERVER and we will achieve the desired effect we want (to cease responding if the VIP fails or is set to out of service).

Adjusting this setting will resolve the issue of Citrix ADC still responding to ping/ICMP when a VIP fails or is disabled.

Big thanks to our Allen Perry for the tip.
